Tribute To The All-Steel Explorer: New Horological Artwork Now Available On The Bizyjoe Store Leave a comment

The Rolex Explorer has dropped its 39mm diameter and returned to the 36mm diameter of the original model, which was introduced in 1953, following Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s first ascent to the peak of Mount Everest on May 29th of that year. Our newest Horological Artwork is a wonderful watch artwork by our featured artist, Tamás Fehér, who has placed Everest right in the heart of the dial of the Rolex Explorer 1016. Reference 1016, which debuted in 1963, is a 36mm-wide edition of the Rolex Explorer that is strikingly similar to the current all-Oystersteel version unveiled just a few weeks ago.

Tamás’s signature style is combining some of the most popular wristwatches with one or more theme components important to their history, design, functionality, or prized collector status. This magnificent work of art precisely recreates the awe-inspiring image of the intimidating peak, putting this massive creation of nature onto the classically small dial of a man-made object. A seemingly unachievable mix in both art and reality — but the end product is absolutely extraordinary.

Tamás spent nearly a week drawing this watch totally by hand on a blank sheet of paper. He utilized nothing but basic tools, pencils, and enviable patience to connect the Explorer to its primary source of inspiration: Mount Everest, after rigorous initial design and planning. The result is a remarkably crisp rendition of the core details that make the Explorer a fan favorite: the typical Rolex Oyster case and Oyster bracelet, which are both rugged in their industrial nature and beautifully proportionate, as well as the white-on-black dial with its three center-mounted hands and the screw-down crown with its sharp, fluted edges. The reflections on the smooth, polished bezel and brushed lugs and bracelet, as well as the depiction of the world’s highest mountain, are photorealistic (above sea level).
